Chemical Industry Cluster on the North Sea
Globally-operating enterprises from the chemical industry decided in favour of locating in the JadeBay Region decades ago. Today, products as varied as synthetics, zinc alloys and pigments, intended for the global market, all have their origins here and their manufacturers profit from the favourable location of the JadeBay Region. The chemical company INEOS Vinyls Deutschland GmbH, for example, manufactures VCM, PVC and caustic soda at two production facilities directly on the coast at Wilhelmshaven. All necessary raw materials are transported to the works by sea. A further area of chemical industry concentration is found in the Wesermarsch where a number of international companies have also located.
Furthermore, the German-American company Kronos International produces titanium dioxide pigments in Nordenham. Also at home in Nordenham is XStrata Zink GmbH which supplies more than 140,000 tons of high-purity zinc and high-purity zinc alloys per year to various customers, including the steel industry. These plants also profit tremendously from the favourable coastal location, as does Weser Metall GmbH – a company with a long history. Located directly on the Weser estuary, this company has been producing lead for more than a hundred years. One of its uses today is in starter batteries for the auto industry.
