GDF SUEZ Energie Deutschland AG – until January 2009 operating under the name Electrabel Deutschland AG – is currently building a coal-fired power station in Wilhelmshaven. SGL Rotec GmbH & Co. KG was originally founded by the shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen for the production of rotor blades. What prompted a traditional shipyard to become involved in the field of alternative energies? Did the conditions locally play a (particular) part in this respect?
In the 1980s the shipyard was awarded a contract by the German Navy to manufacture attachment parts made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) for submarines. A department for the production of these CFRP components was set up at the shipyard.
